Toyota’s Eco-plastic is, on the surface, a simple technology, but it is one with real potential. Rather than manufacturing some of the plastic components used in the Toyota Prius and Lexus HS 250h from petroleum, a number are made from the oils derived from non-food-grade plants. In the case of the HS 250h the seat foam, parcel shelf, scuff plates and the material that lines the trunk compartment are all eco-plastic (about 30% by area). The other advantage? When compared with a car finished with petroleum-based plastics, the eco-plastic cut CO2 emissions by 20%. The use of plant-derived plastics (without downgrading the quality and durability of the given component) has the potential to have a massive environmental impact, both in the near term and in the future.
